Land Con 3: A Fan's Perspective.

December 18, 2019

After having attended many Outlander Conventions (Emerald City, Wizard World, Starfury/Highlanders, San Diego Comic Con and New York Comic Con) I decided to venture out of my comfort zone and attend a convention whereby French was the spoken language. I recently attended Land Con 3 which is held in Paris.

This was an extraordinary convention. There were many tiers of tickets that could be purchased and each tier offered different perks. The most

expensive Pass called Prestige afforded the ticket holder many wonderful opportunities. Each Prestige Pass Holder was assigned a handler to help guide them through the labyrinth of photos, autographs, meet and greets, brunch with cast members and a "head to to beginning of the line" treat so waiting on long lines was avoided when it came to photos and autographs. You were also guaranteed front row seating at all panels.

As luck would have it, most of the current main cast were present at this convention including, Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, Richard Rankin, Sophie Skelton, Cesar Domboy, Lauren Lyle, Ed Speleers, John Bell, Steven Cree and Romann Berrux. Unfortunately, David Berry was unable to attend and he was sorely missed. During the photograph portion, the cast were so gracious in posing for all kinds of requests. The autographs were personalized and while waiting for the signatures, you were able to chat briefly with each actor.

I had a meet and greet with Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe and Steven Cree. Sam mentioned that we may see flashbacks in the new season. He was so surprised but pleased that his Tartan wear sold so quickly. He had a hard time getting the society that oversees the making of Tartan's approval. They didn't want him to use the name "Sassenach" because it is a derogatory word. Sam explained how it is used as a term of endearment and then they permitted its use. The whisky should be available this month in the US. Each meet and greet was spoken in English so it gave us more time to ask questions and receive answers that did not have to be translated for the entire group. All the people who worked the convention were so helpful. The only drawback to attending a convention in a country where their first language is not your first language was the translation issue.

Most questions during the panels were asked in French. We know that Cesar, Romann and Caitriona speak the language but for the other cast, the questions had to be translated into English and then their answers translated back into French. This took time away from the panels. I asked Sam if he understood French and he said he could understand just a little bit of the language.

Overall, I had a fantastic time and would highly recommend this convention.
